Potatoes for Schools

<<<< return to previous page

As part of a nationwide campaign the British Potato Council are sponsoring schools to grow their own potatoes. This year the year 1 and 2 are taking part.

The project began on March 1st with the children putting the seed potatoes in an egg box. This is then put in the window to give the shoots time to grow. This is called chitting.

After 2 weeks the potatoes were beginning to sprout.

We then half filled a bucket with compost.

Then we planted the potatoes with the shoots facing upwards and filled the bucket up with more compost.

And finally we watered them.

On April 12 th, after a long wait, the first signs of shoots became visible.

They quickly began to grow leaves. We must remember to keep watering them in the warm weather.

On June 21st the big day came to weigh our crop.

We had 1kg and 70g of potatoes.

Finally the best bit came. We washed the potatoes,

cooked them and then ate them.

And we all agreed they were delicious!
